Technology giants Google and Nvidia announced plans to deepen their engagement in India, with a focus on leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) technology, following a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. The discussions took place during Modi's three-day visit to the United States.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang praised Modi’s enthusiasm for AI, stating, “The Prime Minister has always been keen on learning about artificial intelligence, its potential, and opportunities for India.” He described Modi as an "incredible student" who continuously seeks to understand the impact of technology on society and industry.
Nvidia, which holds an estimated 88% market share in the global Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) sector, plays a critical role in AI workloads. Huang highlighted India’s strengths, noting that it is home to some of the world’s best computer scientists, offering significant opportunities for the country.
“AI is also a new industry, a new manufacturing industry. I’m looking forward to partnering with India in a very deep way to make that possible. We have many partnerships with India. For one, we’re helping India gain access to our most advanced technologies,” Huang said. Nvidia has collaborated with Yotta Data Services, which plans to scale up its GPU count to 32,768 units by 2025.
Huang also emphasised India’s vibrant startup ecosystem, stating, “India is home to the third-largest startup economy, and the work of all new generations of startups is based on AI. Every IIT has an Nvidia AI Centre of Excellence. We’re teaching professionals and students how to upskill into this new world of AI.”
He added, "AI is a very complicated technology, but in the end, it enables a country to take advantage of the technology in a way that has never been possible before. AI really democratised computing. This is India’s moment—you have to seize it."
Google CEO Sundar Pichai also reflected on his meeting with Modi, acknowledging the Prime Minister’s vision for transforming India through Digital India initiatives. “He challenged us to think about applications in healthcare, education, agriculture, and infrastructure, including data centres, power, and energy. We are robustly investing in AI in India, and we look forward to doing more,” Pichai said.
Pichai highlighted Modi’s focus on AI benefiting India’s population. “He has a clear vision, both in terms of the opportunity that AI will create, but he wants to make sure ultimately, AI is there to benefit the people of India,” Pichai said. "He is challenging us to do more."
The meeting, held at the Lotte New York Palace Hotel on Sunday, featured a roundtable with CEOs from US-based firms working on cutting-edge technologies such as AI, quantum computing, and semiconductors.
