Bandi Sanjay Kumar, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national general secretary and Karimnagar MP, officially assumed his role as Minister of State (MoS) for Home Affairs on Thursday, June 13.
The ceremony took place at the North Block, Secretariat Building in New Delhi, in the presence of Hampi mutt seer Sri Sri Sri Vidyaranya Bharathi Swamiji and fellow minister Nityanand Rai, according to a BJP press release.
Kumar's appointment is significant as it highlights the increasing representation of Telangana in the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) cabinet. Alongside Kumar, Telangana BJP president G Kishan Reddy was appointed as the cabinet minister for Coal and Mines. This duo strengthens Telangana's voice in the central government, underscoring the region's political importance.
Bandi Sanjay Kumar's political journey has been marked by significant achievements. He secured his position as the MP for the Karimnagar Lok Sabha constituency in the 2024 elections, winning for the second consecutive term.
Kumar garnered 5,85,116 votes, defeating his nearest rival, Velchala Rajendar Rao of the Congress, who received 3,59,907 votes. This victory, with a margin of over 2.25 lakh votes, solidifies his influence and popularity in the region.
Kumar's entry into the Union Ministry of Home Affairs is notable as it marks the second time an individual from Telangana has served in this capacity. The first was G Kishan Reddy, who held the position of MoS Home between 2019 and 2021. Kumar's appointment reflects the BJP's strategic focus on Telangana, aiming to consolidate its support base and enhance governance in the state.
