Prime Minister Narendra Modi waves at supporters as he arrives for a public meeting ahead of Lok Sabha elections, in Salem, Tamil Nadu, Tuesday, March 19, 2024.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) asserted on Tuesday that its performance in southern India, historically challenging terrain beyond Karnataka, is poised to make a significant mark.

Accusing the Congress of directing a campaign rife with falsehoods and disinformation, the BJP anticipates a momentous outcome in the Lok Sabha polls come June 4.

Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who contested against incumbent MP Shashi Tharoor from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, exuded confidence that June 4 would witness a watershed moment in electoral history.

Chandrasekhar stressed on the BJP's robust showing in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, predicting a formidable tally of around 60 seats across the southern region.

With a combined total of 131 Lok Sabha seats at stake, the BJP aims to amplify its presence beyond its stronghold in Karnataka. In the 2019 elections, the party clinched 29 seats, predominantly in Karnataka, while drawing a blank in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu.

Polling has concluded in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, setting the stage for an eagerly anticipated electoral reckoning. Chandrasekhar underscored a fierce electoral contest in Kerala, where the BJP contends for nine crucial seats, while projecting a transformative political landscape in Tamil Nadu, emerging as a pivotal second force in the state's political arena.

Accusing the Congress of peddling deceit and misinformation, Chandrasekhar decried the party's campaign tactics, characterised by deepfake videos and spurious economic promises.

Denouncing the Congress's allegations of BJP's intentions to alter the Constitution, Chandrasekhar rebuffed such claims, highlighting the Congress's own history of amending the Constitution extensively.

Amid ongoing police actions in BJP-governed states and under the jurisdiction of the Delhi Police, ostensibly targeting morphed videos implicating Home Minister Amit Shah, Chandrasekhar pinned the blame squarely on the Congress.

Asserting that stringent legal provisions exist against promoting deepfake content, Chandrasekhar admonished the Congress for resorting to such tactics, resonating with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's earlier warnings about the dangers of deepfake technology.
