After winning all seven seats in Delhi, the newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Members of Parliament (MPs) met with Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Thursday. The official X account of Raj Niwas Delhi, managed by the LG Secretariat, posted a photo of the meeting and said, “Newly elected Members of Lok Sabha from Delhi called on Hon’ble Lt Governor today.”
The BJP achieved a remarkable victory by securing all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi for the third consecutive time.
In the north-east Delhi constituency, incumbent BJP MP Manoj Tiwari won with a significant margin of 1,38,778 votes against Congress candidate Kanhaiya Kumar, who is known for being a former president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union.
Praveen Khandelwal triumphed in Chandni Chowk, defeating Congress’s Jaiprakash Agarwal by 89,325 votes. In East Delhi, Harsh Malhotra beat Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Kuldeep Kumar with a margin of 93,663 votes.
Bansuri Swaraj from New Delhi overcame AAP’s Somnath Bharti with a margin of 78,370 votes. From North-West Delhi, Yogender Chandoliya defeated Udit Raj of Congress by an impressive 2,90,849 votes.
Ramvir Singh Bidhuri from South Delhi won against AAP’s Sahi Ram with a margin of 1,24,333 votes. Lastly, Kamaljeet Sehrawat from West Delhi emerged victorious over AAP’s Mahabal Mishra by a margin of 1,99,013 votes.
According to the Election Commission of India, the BJP won 240 seats nationwide, which is a decrease from its 2019 tally of 303. The Congress, however, showed substantial improvement, winning 99 seats.
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured 292 seats, while the opposition INDIA bloc crossed the 230 mark, presenting stiff competition and defying many predictions.
Despite the BJP securing a third term, the party needed the support of its coalition partners, primarily JD (U) chief Nitish Kumar and TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu.
Following the election results, NDA leaders unanimously passed a resolution in their meeting, electing Narendra Modi as their leader. Sources indicated that PM Modi will take the oath for the third time on June 8.
On Wednesday, President Droupadi Murmu dissolved the 17th Lok Sabha on the recommendation of the Union Cabinet. A statement issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan read, “The President accepted the advice of the Cabinet on June 5, 2024, and signed the Order dissolving the 17th Lok Sabha in the exercise of the powers conferred upon her by Sub-Clause (2) of Article 85 of the Constitution.”
The BJP's resounding victory in Delhi and the overall election results underscore the party's continued dominance in Indian politics, even as it faces challenges from a reinvigorated opposition.
The meeting between the newly elected MPs and the Lieutenant Governor marks a significant step as they prepare to assume their responsibilities and work towards fulfilling their electoral promises.
