Fact-check debunks false claims of Congress 'abstention' in Arunachal Pradesh polls

The viral post circulating on social media claimed that the Congress party refrained from nominating candidates in Arunachal Pradesh to avert potential backlash from China.

A recent post circulating on social media platforms has falsely alleged that the Congress party refrained from nominating candidates in Arunachal Pradesh due to apprehensions about upsetting China. Dismissing these claims, it has been confirmed that Congress has, in fact, fielded candidates for both the general and state assembly elections in the region.

The viral post asserted that the Congress party abstained from nominating candidates in Arunachal Pradesh to avoid potential repercussions from China, citing a purported 2009 Memorandum of Understanding between the Congress and the Chinese Communist Party.

Additionally, it claimed that Rahul Gandhi's 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra' did not traverse Arunachal Pradesh.

The text of the viral post reads,

“Congress didn’t field any candidate in Arunachal Pradesh because China might get angry  and also because it will be a breach of the 2009 MoU signed between the Congress and the Chinese Communist Party. Also, despite starting in the North East,Pappu’s Bharat Anyay Yatra* never entered Arunachal Pradesh. The reason being the same. The shameless Congress is in a partnership  with India’s enemy.*Vote wisely in 2024.*Do not forget the fact that Congress is the number one internal  enemy of India.”

Fact-checked findings:

Contrary to the viral claims, Congress has actively participated in the electoral process in Arunachal Pradesh by nominating candidates for both the Lok Sabha and assembly elections.

Verification conducted through the Election Commission of India's official website and affidavits filed by contesting candidates confirmed the presence of Congress nominees for both Arunachal East and Arunachal West constituencies.

For the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Congress has nominated Bosiram Siram and Nabam Tuki for the Arunachal East and Arunachal West constituencies respectively, as officially recorded by the Election Commission.

Moreover, Congress has also put forth candidates for various constituencies in the upcoming state assembly elections.

Despite initial reports suggesting a larger number of candidates, subsequent updates revealed that the total count of Congress representatives contesting the state assembly elections stands at 19, following some withdrawals.

'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra' in Arunachal Pradesh:

Dismissing claims of the yatra's exclusion from Arunachal Pradesh, credible sources have confirmed its presence in the state.

Reports from reputable publications such as The Hindu document the yatra's entry into Arunachal Pradesh on January 20, where Rahul Gandhi was received by state Congress Committee president Nabam Tuki in Papum Pare district.

Visual evidence of the yatra in the state is available on Rahul Gandhi's official YouTube channel.
