The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken a firm stance against Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate and party leader HS Ahir for what it deemed as ‘lewd and derogatory’ social media posts directed at actor Kangana Ranaut.
The NCW, in a letter addressed to the Election Commission of India (ECI), has urged for ‘strict action’ against the individuals involved.
Expressing dismay over the behavior exhibited by Shrinate and Ahir, NCW Chief Rekha Sharma emphasized the importance of upholding the dignity and respect of women, “Such behavior is intolerable and goes against the dignity of women,” stated Sharma in a letter to the ECI, demanding immediate action.
Reacting to the controversy, Sharma extended words of support to Kangana Ranaut, referring to her as a “fighter and shining star.” “Keep shining, all the best. Writing to ECI,” Sharma conveyed via a post on X (formerly Twitter).
The controversy erupted following a post from Shrinate’s Instagram account, which targeted Ranaut over her candidature for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
The post, accompanied by a picture of the actor, questioned the current market rate in Mandi, the constituency from which Ranaut is contesting.
Shrinate, a former journalist, later clarified that the post was ‘extremely inappropriate’ and claimed that it was made by someone who had unauthorized access to her social media accounts. Ahir echoed a similar sentiment, attributing the offensive post to someone with access to his accounts.
In response to the controversy, the BJP has demanded action from the Congress, urging the party to address the matter promptly.
However, as of now, there has been no official response from the Congress or its senior leaders regarding the incident.
