A dire scarcity of drinking water has ignited unrest among villagers residing within the Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency of Assam.

Faced with acute shortages, residents have issued ultimatums, threatening to boycott the forthcoming polls unless immediate action is taken to redress the situation.

Ravapara village, situated in Abhayapuri within Bongaigaon district and falling under the jurisdiction of the Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency, finds itself grappling with an alarming lack of potable water.

Despite the passage of 77 years since Independence, the fundamental right to clean water continues to elude the villagers of Ravapara, a constituent of Abhayapuri's Badigaon panchayat.

Existing provisions for water supply have proven inadequate, leaving villagers dependent on a solitary hand pump, which caters to the needs of approximately 300 to 400 individuals from 50 to 60 households.

The water scarcity has severely impacted daily life in Ravapara for the past 3-4 months, hindering activities like washing clothes and bathing.

Expressing their exasperation, locals have beseeched the intervention of the state's chief minister to urgently address the crisis and facilitate the provision of water in the area.

"We implore the chief minister to take immediate action, failing which villagers may be compelled to boycott the upcoming Lok Sabha elections," remarked a concerned resident.

Barpeta, nestled in the northeastern expanse of Assam, holds pivotal significance as a constituency wielding considerable political influence within the state's landscape.

Scheduled to cast their votes in the third phase of elections on May 7, 2024, the constituency commands a populace of 1,693,622, comprising 867,004 males and 826,618 females.
