The Foreign Ministers of BRICS countries have emphasised the importance of the G20 as the primary platform for global economic cooperation, reaffirming its role in addressing global challenges and promoting inclusive economic growth.

They welcomed the inclusion of the African Union in the G20 and highlighted the productive presidencies of India, Brazil, and South Africa in addressing economic imbalances.

At a meeting in Russia's Nizhny Novgorod, Dammu Ravi, Secretary (Economic Relations) at the Ministry of External Affairs, led India's delegation, marking the country's active engagement under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.

The joint statement of the meeting emphasised the G20's role in promoting mutual cooperation between developed and developing countries, with a focus on delivering tangible outcomes through consensus-based decision-making. The ministers stressed the need for inclusiveness and collaboration, supporting Brazil's priorities as the current G20 President.

Recognizing the intersection of sustainable development and global health, the ministers emphasised the importance of inclusive and equitable international health cooperation. They underscored the need for a science-based, depoliticized approach to global health issues, with a commitment to transparency and mutual respect among nations.

In addition to health, the ministers discussed food security, rural development, and energy cooperation among BRICS countries. They highlighted the significance of ensuring universal access to affordable and reliable energy for economic development and social stability.

This meeting marks the first gathering of foreign ministers since the expansion of BRICS in 2023, with Egypt, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia joining as full members.

Russia, as the current chair of BRICS, is leading efforts to strengthen cooperation among member states in addressing global challenges and advancing common interests.
