Security has been beefed up in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar constituency ahead of the Lok Sabha elections on Monday to ensure incident-free elections and safety of voters, officials said on Thursday.
Recent terror attacks in Kulgam and Poonch have underlined the need for stringent measures to keep sensitive zones safe.
"Extra security measures will be implemented so that people can exercise their right to franchise in a free and secure environment," sources said.
Security personnel in Baramulla and the newly constituted Anantnag-Rajouri seat have also stepped up preparations.
After successfully conducting elections in Jammu and Udhampur constituency the focus of security forces has now shifted to Srinagar LS polls.
Srinagar will go to the polls on May 13, followed by Baramulla on May 20. Additionally, polls for the Anantnag-Rajouri parliamentary seat, which were previously postponed, have been rescheduled for May 25.
A comprehensive security plan has been designed to strengthen polling booths depending on their sensitivity, secure the strong room, and protect the collecting and distribution centres for electronic voting machines (EVMs).
Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amod Nagpure said on Friday that efforts were being made to educate the public about the profound importance of their vote, fostering an environment conducive to a peaceful and transparent election."
Simultaneously, Nagpure stressed the crackdown on hard-core drug peddlers, signalling a holistic effort to tackle many types of criminal activity in the region, thereby strengthening community safety and well-being.
