Netflix is intensifying its efforts to address a serious leak that resulted in unreleased episodes of popular series such as Terminator Zero, Arcane, Squid Game, and Ranma 1/2 appearing online earlier this year.
The incident was traced back to Iyuno, a post-production facility, which exposed private content before its official launch and raised concerns about piracy.
Described as “the biggest leaking disaster in anime history,” the incident was first detected when low-resolution clips, featuring watermarks and timestamps, started circulating on social media platforms like Twitter and 4Chan. Complete episodes of shows including Terminator Zero, Ranma ½, and Dandadan surfaced online, sparking considerable outrage within the anime community.
Netflix swiftly issued an official statement, declaring they were “actively taking action” against the individual responsible for the leaks. In a strategic decision, Netflix has teamed up with Discord to track down the individual behind the leaks.
The Northern District of California has issued a subpoena requiring Discord to disclose the identity of the user "@jacejohns4n," who is suspected of sharing unreleased content from Squid Game: Season 2.
The leak, which took place in August, is suspected to have stemmed from a security breach at Iyuno, a post-production studio that partners with major streaming services. Netflix is not the only one facing the repercussions; Iyuno also collaborates with industry titans like Amazon, Disney, and HBO.
A Netflix representative commented on the situation, stating, “One of our post-production partners has been compromised and footage from several of our titles has unfortunately leaked online. Our team is aggressively taking action to have it taken down.”
Iyuno acknowledged the breach and affirmed its commitment to security. A spokesperson for Iyuno stated, “Iyuno is aware of a recent security issue, involving unauthorised access to confidential content. Protecting our clients’ confidentiality and ensuring the security of their content is our highest priority. We are actively investigating this security breach to mitigate any potential risks and identify the responsible parties.”
