National Security Advisor Ajit Doval recently attended the 4th Annual Meeting of BIMSTEC Security Chiefs in Naypyitaw, Myanmar, leading the Indian delegation. His participation highlighted India's commitment to enhancing regional security cooperation. Doval's national statement underscored the importance of strengthening efforts against terrorism, drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and organised crime.

He also emphasised BIMSTEC connectivity, the significance of holding a second Ports Conclave, and water security for the Himalayan river systems. The Indian Embassy in Myanmar shared details of the meeting on social media, noting that Doval had fruitful discussions with Myanmar's National Security Advisor, Admiral Moe Aung.

Additionally, BIMSTEC Security Chiefs, including Doval, met with Myanmar's Prime Minister, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, to further discuss collaborative efforts.

Doval’s discussions with Admiral Moe Aung and the collective meeting with Myanmar's Prime Minister were part of broader strategic initiatives aimed at addressing common security challenges faced by BIMSTEC member states. These meetings provided a platform to align on critical security issues and explore ways to bolster cooperation in various areas of mutual interest.

On the same day, India assumed the role of the lead country for security sector collaboration within BIMSTEC. This responsibility underscores India's proactive approach in fostering regional security and its commitment to addressing the complex security dynamics in the Bay of Bengal region. The Senior Officials Meeting in Naypyitaw was pivotal in strategizing and coordinating initiatives to tackle these challenges effectively.

BIMSTEC, or the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, is a regional organisation that promotes economic cooperation and connectivity among seven countries in the Bay of Bengal region: India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Nepal, and Bhutan. India, as a founding member, plays a crucial role in steering the group's agenda towards collective growth and stability.

Doval’s address at the meeting highlighted several key areas for collaboration. Counter-terrorism remains a top priority, with efforts to create a unified front against the threat of terrorism.

Drug trafficking and arms smuggling were also focal points, recognizing the need for concerted efforts to combat these illicit activities that destabilise the region. Organised crime, another significant concern, was addressed, emphasising the necessity for robust cooperation among member states.

Connectivity within the BIMSTEC region was another important theme in Doval’s statement. Enhancing transport and communication links is essential for economic growth and regional integration. The proposal to hold a second Ports Conclave reflects the emphasis on maritime cooperation, vital for the Bay of Bengal region’s economic and strategic interests.

Water security, particularly concerning the Himalayan river systems, was also discussed. This issue is critical for ensuring sustainable development and addressing the environmental challenges faced by the member countries. Cooperation in this area is vital for the region's long-term stability and prosperity.

The 4th Annual Meeting of BIMSTEC Security Chiefs marked a significant step in strengthening regional cooperation. The discussions and agreements reached at this meeting will pave the way for more robust and coordinated efforts to address the multifaceted security challenges in the region.

With India leading the charge in the security sector, BIMSTEC is poised to make substantial progress in enhancing regional security and fostering a collaborative environment among its member states.

NSA Ajit Doval’s active participation and leadership at the BIMSTEC meeting underscore India’s commitment to regional security cooperation. The discussions and initiatives set forth during this meeting will contribute significantly to addressing common security challenges and promoting peace and stability in the Bay of Bengal region.

As BIMSTEC continues to evolve, the collaborative efforts of its member states will be crucial in achieving shared goals and fostering a secure and prosperous regional environment.
