U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Israel on Sunday for his ninth diplomatic mission to the Middle East since the onset of the Israel-Hamas war, with the objective of advancing a cease-fire agreement.

Blinken's visit comes as mediators intensify efforts to finalise a deal. He is scheduled to meet with top Israeli officials on Monday before travelling to Cairo on Tuesday for further discussions.

Recent progress reports indicate a potential agreement where Israel would cease most military operations in Gaza and release Palestinian prisoners in return for hostages held by Hamas.

A senior official accompanying Blinken stated, "His arrival in the region is timely, as we push for a swift conclusion to alleviate civilian suffering and prevent further escalation."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remarked at a Cabinet meeting that negotiations are ongoing but emphasized that Israel is not simply conceding to demands.

The proposed deal includes a three-phase plan: Hamas would release all hostages taken during its October 7 attack, while Israel would withdraw its forces from Gaza and release Palestinian detainees.

U.S. President Joe Biden expressed cautious optimism on Friday, stating, "We are closer than we’ve ever been," and Vice President Kamala Harris reiterated the ongoing commitment to securing a cease-fire and releasing hostages.

The conflict has claimed over 40,000 lives in Gaza since its inception, with about 1,200 fatalities in Israel, predominantly civilians, following the Hamas attacks on October 7.

The Biden administration faces mounting pressure to secure a cease-fire amid growing protests against U.S. support for Israel.
