In a move to address the acute water shortage in the Maldives, the government has announced the arrival of 1,500 tonnes of drinking water donated by China from the glaciers of Tibet.

The shipment, a result of discussions held during the official visit of China's Tibet Autonomous Region's Chairman, Yan Jinhai, to the Maldives last November, is a result of the growing cooperation between the two nations.

According to reports, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the delivery of the drinking water shipment, highlighting its origin from glacial regions renowned for their pristine quality and mineral-rich content.

Notably, Tibet Autonomous Region is known for producing premium brands of water, adding value to the aid provided.

This assistance from China comes at a time when it has broader pledges of support, particularly since President Mohamed Muizzu's assumption of office in November 2023, signalling strengthened ties between the two countries.

Earlier in March, President Muizzu announced a landmark agreement with China for free "non-lethal" military equipment and training, further solidifying bilateral relations.

Traditionally recognised for its contributions to the Maldives' urban and economic development, China's recent aid extends to addressing critical issues such as water scarcity, a persistent challenge in the island nation.

With 26 atolls and over 1,100 islands predominantly composed of coral reefs and sandbars, access to freshwater is limited, exacerbated by the impacts of climate change.

In past crises, neighbouring India has also extended support, exemplified by 'Operation Neer' in December 2014, when Indian aircraft and ships delivered significant quantities of drinking water to alleviate water shortages following a major fire incident.

The Maldives' strategic location in the Indian Ocean Region, coupled with its proximity to India, underscores its significance in regional dynamics.

The Foreign Ministry's commitment to distributing the donated water to islands facing water scarcity reflects a concerted effort to address pressing humanitarian needs across the nation.
