India and China held "constructive and forward-looking" talks on Wednesday to address the ongoing border standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh.
The discussions took place in Delhi under the framework of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC).
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reported that both sides reviewed the current situation along the LAC to find an early resolution to the outstanding issues.
“Restoration of peace and tranquillity, and respect for the LAC are an essential basis for the restoration of normalcy in bilateral relations,” the MEA stated.
Tensions between India and China escalated in 2020 when a violent clash occurred in the Galwan Valley, resulting in casualties on both sides.
This incident marked the first deadly encounter between the two nations in decades and led to a significant military build-up along the disputed border.
“They agreed on the need to jointly uphold peace and tranquillity on the ground and in the border areas in accordance with relevant bilateral agreements, protocols, and understandings reached between the two governments,” the MEA added in a statement.
“The discussion at the meeting was in-depth, constructive and forward-looking. Both sides agreed to maintain momentum through established diplomatic and military channels.”
Despite multiple rounds of military and diplomatic talks, tensions have persisted, with occasional skirmishes and standoffs reported.
The WMCC meetings are part of ongoing efforts to de-escalate the situation and establish lasting peace in the region.
