The Commonwealth Journalists Association (CJA) on Saturday made a fervent appeal to Md Yunus, the head of Bangladesh's interim government, urging him to ensure the safety and security of journalists in the country.
The call comes in the wake of escalating threats and physical assaults targeting members of the press.
In a letter addressed to Yunus, the CJA expressed deep concern over the recent wave of attacks on journalists and media outlets in Bangladesh.
"The Commonwealth Journalists Association strongly urges you to take swift actions to ensure the physical safety and secure working environment for journalists and media outlets in Bangladesh who in recent days have experienced serious physical attacks and acts of intimidation," the letter read.
The association underscored the critical role of a free press in a democracy, emphasizing that media freedom, safeguarded by law, is essential for the health of any democratic society. "We appeal to you to take prompt and effective steps to restore the rule of law in these cases, and to ensure that all journalists in Bangladesh enjoy freedom of movement and protection from acts of violence," the CJA added.
Md Yunus, 84, who was sworn in as the head of the interim government earlier this week, faces increasing pressure to address the deteriorating situation for journalists in the country.
His appointment followed the resignation and subsequent flight of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India amid widespread protests against her government's controversial job quota system.
