The World Health Organisation stated on Thursday that Covid-19 continues to claim the lives of approximately 1,700 individuals globally each week.

The organisation urged vulnerable groups to continue getting vaccinated against the disease. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the WHO, cautioned about the decrease in vaccine coverage.

Despite the continued death count, "data show that vaccine coverage has declined among health workers and people over 60, which are two of the most at-risk groups," the UN health agency's chief told a press conference.

"WHO recommends that people in the highest-risk groups receive a Covid-19 vaccine within 12 months of their last dose."

More than seven million Covid deaths have been reported to the WHO, though the pandemic's true count is considered far higher.

The Covid-19 pandemic caused severe damage to economies and overwhelmed healthcare systems.

Tedros announced the conclusion of the international public health emergency status for COVID-19 in May 2023, marking over three years since the virus was initially identified in Wuhan, China, in late 2019.

The WHO has encouraged governments to continue monitoring the virus and conducting genetic sequencing while also ensuring that affordable and dependable tests, treatments, and vaccines are accessible.
