Former German president Horst Kohler dies after illness.

Horst Köhler, former President of Germany and a key figure in global finance, passed away at the age of 81 on Saturday morning in Berlin. He died after a brief illness, surrounded by his family. The current President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, confirmed his death in a statement.

Köhler was an internationally respected leader, serving as the President of Germany from 2004 to 2010. He had previously made a name for himself as the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), where he led economic reforms and helped guide international financial policy.

However, it was his presidency in Germany that saw him become a household name, even though his entry into politics had been far from conventional.

Before becoming president, Köhler was largely unknown to the German public. When he was nominated for the position, a leading daily newspaper ran a headline that read, “Horst Who?” Nonetheless, once in office, Köhler's leadership style earned him significant popularity.

He was seen as an outsider to the political establishment, which helped him relate to ordinary Germans.

During his presidency, Köhler did not shy away from making controversial decisions, occasionally refusing to sign bills into law due to constitutional concerns. His stance on some issues, especially regarding economic policies, didn’t always sit well with Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government.

Despite this, Köhler maintained a strong position, offering his insights into Germany’s future while calling for greater reform. His presidency was marked by his belief in the strength of Germany and its ability to adapt to global challenges.

Köhler's presidency was notable for his calls for economic change, particularly in the wake of Germany’s economic struggles in the early 2000s.

In 2005, he famously dissolved parliament to allow early elections for Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, citing that Germany was facing “giant challenges.” His decision to dissolve parliament ultimately paved the way for Merkel’s rise to power.

While Köhler supported economic reforms, he was also a vocal critic of financial markets during the 2008 global economic crisis.

He referred to them as a “monster” that needed to be tamed, showing his commitment to financial regulation and stability. His blunt approach to addressing global economic issues earned him respect in both Germany and abroad.

Despite his popularity, Köhler shocked the nation by resigning in May 2010. The reason behind his sudden departure was a controversy over comments he made in a radio interview about Germany's military missions.

Köhler suggested that, for a country dependent on exports like Germany, military deployments could sometimes be necessary to protect vital trade routes. This comment sparked public outrage, with many believing it was linked to the German mission in Afghanistan.

Although his office later clarified that Köhler was referring to anti-piracy patrols off Somalia’s coast, the resignation was seen as a dramatic end to his presidency.

Some speculated that Köhler’s resignation was also linked to a lack of support from Merkel's government, though the true motivations remain unclear.

Köhler’s foreign policy was also noteworthy. He was an advocate for Africa, working to raise awareness about the continent’s challenges.

In one of his most significant diplomatic moves, he became the second German president to address Israel’s Knesset, where he expressed deep sorrow for the victims of the Holocaust. He also placed emphasis on strengthening Germany's relationship with Poland, marking it as a priority for his presidency.

Born on February 22, 1943, in Skierbieszow, Poland, Köhler's early life was shaped by the upheavals of World War II. His family fled from Nazi-occupied Poland and eventually settled in Germany.

Köhler’s early years in East Germany, followed by his relocation to West Germany, shaped his worldview. He went on to have a successful career in economic diplomacy, which included his time as the president of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

His role in shaping the euro and in negotiating the reunification of Germany were significant achievements in his career.

Köhler's tenure at the IMF was marked by his efforts to reform the institution, increasing its transparency and effectiveness in crisis management. U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow praised Köhler’s leadership at the IMF, noting that he helped develop better tools for crisis prevention.

Horst Köhler’s legacy is one of service to both Germany and the international community. He was known for his optimism, strong belief in the potential of Germany, and his commitment to reforming the country’s financial and political systems.

His approachability, infectious laughter, and steadfast belief in the strength of Germany’s people made him a beloved figure in his home country.

In a heartfelt letter of condolence, President Steinmeier described Köhler as a person who had “achieved great things—for our country and in the world.”

Steinmeier noted that Köhler’s legacy would be defined not just by his policies but also by his character—his ability to connect with people and his unyielding commitment to his ideals.

He is survived by his wife, Eva Louise, and their children, Ulrike and Jochen. His death marks the end of an era for both Germany and the global financial community.
