India strongly rebuked Pakistan at the United Nations on Tuesday, drawing a sharp contrast between the two neighbours on matters of security, governance, and economic stability. Speaking at a high-level open debate of the UN Security Council (UNSC) on "Promoting International Peace and Security through Multilateralism and Peaceful Settlement of Disputes", Indian Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish underlined India's progress as a responsible global player while highlighting Pakistan’s continued reliance on extremist ideologies and international financial aid.
“India is a responsible actor and a founding member of the United Nations, always actively engaged constructively with partners, especially at the United Nations, in collectively working towards a more peaceful, prosperous, just, and equitable world,” Ambassador Harish told the UNSC.
Contrasting India's trajectory with that of Pakistan, Harish stated, “India is a mature democracy, a surging economy, and a pluralistic and inclusive society. At the other extreme is Pakistan, steeped in fanaticism and terrorism and a serial borrower from the IMF.”
He pointed out that while India is making significant strides globally — both economically and socially — Pakistan continues to borrow from international financial institutions and remains entangled in extremist practices. He stressed that India upholds zero tolerance towards terrorism, which must be recognised as a fundamental principle by all nations. “It ill behoves a member of the Council to offer homilies while indulging in practices that are unacceptable to the international community,” he remarked, clearly referring to Pakistan’s conduct on international platforms.
Ambassador Harish also referred to the April 22 Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 innocent civilians were killed by Pakistani terrorists. He said India responded with Operation Sindoor, a military action targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK). “The military response was focused, measured, and non-escalatory in nature,” he noted.
Following India's retaliatory strike on May 7, tensions between the two nuclear-armed countries increased and a number of cross-border firings resulted. After a ceasefire was agreed upon, the fighting finally subsided on May 10. Later, India explained that it agreed to the ceasefire at Pakistan's express request. This explanation followed US President Donald Trump's public assertion that he was responsible for bringing about peace between the two nations, a claim that India has attempted to refute.
In his speech, Ambassador Harish reaffirmed India's adherence to international norms, multilateralism, and peaceful conflict resolution while denouncing Pakistan for its actions that undermine these very values.
