India's commitment to women-led development took center stage as Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, the nation's Permanent Representative at the UN, outlined the vision for "Viksit Bharat" by 2047. Speaking at a special event during the 68th annual Commission on the Status of Women on Tuesday, Kamboj emphasized the crucial role of women's full and equal participation across all spheres.
"We envision an India where women are self-empowered," Kamboj stated, highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's goal of a fully developed India by 2047. She emphasized the shift from women's development to women-led development, aiming for women to contribute actively to the nation's growth.
India's multifaceted strategy to empower women includes initiatives targeting health, safety, education, employment, and entrepreneurship. Kamboj stressed the importance of gender justice, equality, and women's participation in shaping India's societal, economic, political, and cultural landscape.
Key initiatives such as the One Stop Centre Scheme and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao program were highlighted, addressing women's safety and combating female feticide.
Notably, India boasts a high proportion of women enrolled in STEM disciplines globally and a significant representation of women pilots in civil aviation.
Moreover, the Start-Up India Stand-Up India scheme reserves funds for women-led startups, reflecting India's commitment to fostering women entrepreneurship.
Kamboj reiterated India's determination to further women's empowerment, acknowledging progress while emphasizing the ongoing journey towards a self-empowered India.
