In a significant move towards bolstering energy efficiency and conservation measures, the Union Cabinet under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Bhutan on Wednesday.
The MoU, ratified between the Bureau of Energy Efficiency(BEE) under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, and the Department of Energy within the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of the Royal Government of Bhutan, aims to extend cooperation in the field of energy efficiency and conservation measures.
Under the terms of the MoU, India is set to provide valuable assistance to Bhutan in enhancing energy efficiency in the household sector. This will primarily be achieved through the promotion of the star labeling program developed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency.
Additionally, India will facilitate the formulation of building codes tailored to suit the unique climatic conditions of Bhutan, drawing upon its own extensive experience in the domain.
Central to the agreement is the establishment of a pool of energy professionals within Bhutan, achieved through the institutionalization of training programs for energy auditors. This initiative is aimed at building local capacity and expertise in managing energy resources effectively.
Furthermore, the MoU outlines plans for training retailers in Bhutan, thereby enabling the dissemination of information regarding energy-efficient products and the potential savings offered by star-rated appliances.
By supporting Bhutan in developing and implementing its Standards and Labeling scheme, India aims to assist in optimizing energy consumption, particularly in the face of rising demand driven by energy-intensive consumer goods.
The comprehensive scope of the MoU the commitment of both nations to exchange information, data, and technical expertise related to energy efficiency and conservation, with a focus on ensuring the availability of energy-efficient products in the market.
As the Bureau of Energy Efficiency continues to spearhead India's Star-labelling program, covering 37 appliances essential for daily life, this collaboration with Bhutan marks another milestone in the ongoing efforts to promote energy efficiency and conservation on a global scale.
