India and Qatar recently engaged in discussions about a potential purchase of 12 second-hand Qatari Mirage-2000-5 fighter jets. The talks took place in New Delhi, where a Qatari team presented the current condition of these aircraft to Indian officials.
According to defence sources, the Mirage-2000 jets are in very good condition and have significant operational life remaining.
India is considering this proposal with a focus on the compatibility of these Qatari jets with its own Mirage-2000 fleet. While the Indian Mirage-2000 aircraft are more advanced, both countries' jets share the same engines. This similarity would make it easier for India to maintain the newly acquired aircraft if the deal goes through.
The Qatari side has proposed a price of approximately Rs 5,000 crore for the 12 aircraft. However, India is looking to negotiate a more reasonable price. Along with the aircraft, Qatar is offering missiles and additional engines, which would support flying operations rather than being used merely for spare parts and maintenance.
This potential acquisition is part of India's ongoing efforts to enhance its Air Force capabilities. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the Indian Air Force successfully acquired a significant number of spares and equipment from a French vendor in a second-hand deal. The addition of the Qatari Mirage-2000 jets would increase the number of Mirages in the Indian fleet to 60.
The Mirage-2000 fleet, based in Gwalior, has been a crucial asset for the Indian Air Force. These aircraft have played vital roles in several major operations, including the Kargil war and the Balakot air strikes. They have also been actively deployed along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China on the northern frontier.
The potential deal with Qatar is seen as a strategic move to bolster India's air defence capabilities. By integrating these additional Mirage-2000 jets, the Indian Air Force aims to strengthen its operational readiness and maintain its edge in regional air superiority.
