Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Ram Nath Thakur, along with India's Ambassador to Brazil Suresh Reddy and Joint Secretary (NRM) from the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, participated in the G20 Agriculture Ministerial Meeting held in Cuiabá, Brazil, from 12th to 14th September.
In his address, Thakur highlighted India's focus on agricultural development under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, emphasising a holistic approach that includes productivity, economic, social, and environmental sustainability. He noted India’s efforts to enhance farmer prosperity and its implementation of the world’s largest food-based safety net programmes to ensure food security and nutrition.
Thakur reaffirmed India's commitment to building resilient agricultural systems for a sustainable future. He also stressed the need for Special and Differential Treatment for developing and least-developed countries, pointing out its importance in supporting small and marginal fishers, enabling their participation in global trade talks.
The meeting focused on four priority areas: agricultural sustainability; improving international trade’s role in food security and nutrition; elevating the role of family farmers, smallholders, indigenous peoples, and local communities in agriculture; and promoting sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in value chains.
In addition to the ministerial sessions, Thakur held bilateral meetings aimed at strengthening India’s agricultural ties with other nations.
He expressed India’s willingness to collaborate and contribute to global efforts addressing food system challenges.
Thakur also congratulated Brazil on its successful G20 presidency and extended his best wishes to South Africa for its upcoming presidency.
