Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has expressed serious doubts over the United States' intentions a day before the second round of negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear programme. The talks, scheduled for Saturday, will be held with representatives from the Trump administration.
The new round of talks follows the highest-level discussions between the long-time rivals held a week earlier, marking the first significant talks since US President Donald Trump withdrew from the landmark nuclear deal in 2018.
Speaking at a press conference in Moscow alongside his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, Araghchi said, "Although we have serious doubts about the intentions and motivations of the American side, in any case, we will participate in tomorrow’s negotiations."
Araghchi is set to depart for Rome on Saturday for a fresh round of Omani-mediated talks with US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.
He emphasised that Iran is "fully prepared to pursue a peaceful resolution for Iran’s peaceful nuclear programme."
Meanwhile, Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, reaffirmed his country’s stance, stating that Israel would do everything necessary to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
“When I was appointed Defence Minister, I pledged to lead two central goals: Preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and winning the war,” Katz stated. “The IDF is currently working toward a decisive victory in all arenas.”
Katz further stressed, “Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and I are committed, together with all parties, to leading a clear line that will prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. We will not allow threats of annihilation against the State of Israel.”
Earlier, Mossad chief Dermer confirmed his meeting with US envoy Steve Witkoff in Paris ahead of the upcoming negotiations. Iran has consistently maintained that it does not seek to acquire nuclear weapons and has accused Israel of engaging in a hostile narrative against the Islamic Republic.
