Israel is planning to implement a strategy to replace Hamas authority in northern Gaza, as mentioned by Israeli National Security Advisor Tzachi Hanegbi on Tuesday.

During the Herzliya Conference at Reichman University, Hanegbi stated that weakening Hamas's governance would create opportunities for other nations that support an alternative leadership in Gaza, along with local leadership.

He outlined that the new leadership in Gaza will involve Israel's Abraham Accords partners, the United States, the European Union, and the United Nations.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military will be working to remove Hamas's presence from the area.

"We've been talking about this notion of 'the day after' for many months, and the main thing that we've tried to emphasise throughout is that it's mainly the day after Hamas in the sense that we don't need to wait for it to disappear because that process could take a long time."

"The idea is, and this is what the Americans agree on, including in the conversations this week and also in the conversation that the minister of defence [Yoav Gallant] is conducting right now [in Washington], is that there will be a so-called top-down leadership, and not only bottom-up," he continued.

Hanegbi said, "You cannot completely get Hamas to disappear because it's an idea, a concept."

The Biden administration has urged Israeli authorities to provide a clear plan for governing Gaza after the conflict. They are against Israel taking control of Gaza or letting the situation in the area become chaotic.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has emphasised that Israel's objectives in the conflict are to eliminate Hamas's military and governing capacities, secure the release of all hostages, and make sure that Gaza no longer presents a threat to Israel.
