Israel's military chief, Herzi Halevi, has called for preparations to continue the combat in Lebanon, signalling the possibility of expanding ground operations. His statement, issued after a situational assessment on Wednesday, emphasised that while diplomatic efforts are ongoing, the military must stay ready to escalate its operations if necessary.
Halevi explained that the Israeli forces must not only be prepared for continued operations but also plan for a potential widening of their ground manoeuvres.
His comments followed a series of Israeli military actions targeting Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon, the Bekaa Valley, Beirut, and Syria. These operations, as part of Israel's ongoing offensive, have intensified as the conflict continues.
In addition to the military's preparations, the violence on the ground took a personal toll on the Israeli civilian population. On Wednesday, an 18-year-old Israeli, identified as Sivan Sade, was killed by a rocket attack in northern Israel.
The rocket, launched by Hezbollah forces from Lebanon, struck the agricultural field where Sade was working. He had been activating an irrigation system when the attack occurred. Despite following safety protocols and lying down to avoid the blast, there was no anti-rocket defence available in the rural area.
The death of Sade has added to the ongoing tensions in the region, as Israeli authorities grapple with security concerns and the escalating violence. Halevi's statements, coupled with the loss of life, highlight the increasingly volatile situation in the region, where military actions and diplomatic talks continue to unfold simultaneously.
