Israeli airstrikes in Ras el-Nabaa neighbourhood in central Beirut, Lebanon, have resulted in the deaths of at least 22 people and left 117 others injured, said the Lebanese Health Ministry.
The strikes were carried out on Thursday at midnight without prior warning, hitting two residential buildings in the heart of the capital.
One of the targeted buildings was housing people who had been displaced due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
As per reports, this is the third Israeli strike outside of Dahiyeh, Beirut’s southern suburb, since the military campaign was expanded in late September.
Before this, Israelis on two previous occasions targeted Beirut’s Kola on September 29 and Bachoura on October 3.
Reports indicate that the attack was so severe and intense that its effects were felt nearly half a mile away, with buildings shaking and smoke rising from residential blocks.
Residents evacuated their apartments, fearing the collapse of buildings, as emergency sirens and alarms were sounded in the country’s capital.
Videos available with local news media show chaotic scenes after the strikes, with smoke and flames engulfing residential blocks in Ras el-Nabaa and al-Nuweiri.
Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health said on X that 11 people were killed and 48 wounded in Israeli strikes on Beirut earlier in the evening. This is the third such strike in and around the centre of Beirut.
Meanwhile, medical sources told reporters that 63 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip on Thursday (local time).
While the international community has repeatedly asked Israel to stop its offensive in Gaza and Lebanon, the Israeli side asserts that they are fighting Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
Several nations, including Israel’s supporters, have asked Israel to halt its offensive inside Lebanon as its actions were threatening regional peace.
With this ongoing war in Gaza and Lebanon, the Middle East remains on the edge.
