External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has underscored India's demand for decisive action against individuals who have threatened and intimidated Indian diplomats, particularly in Canada, amidst an ongoing diplomatic standoff between the two nations.
Addressing a summit, Jaishankar emphasized India's expectation for accountability in response to threats faced by its diplomatic missions abroad. He highlighted the need for stern action against perpetrators involved in attacks on Indian facilities, including the High Commission in London and the Consulate in San Francisco, as well as instances of intimidation in Canada.
The minister's remarks come in the wake of a diplomatic rift sparked by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations last year regarding the alleged involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India vehemently rejected Trudeau's claims as baseless and politically motivated.
India's response to the perceived lack of support from the Canadian system included a temporary suspension of visa issuance to Canadian citizens. Jaishankar emphasized the importance of diplomatic safety, stating that the decision was made to protect Indian diplomats who faced repeated threats and intimidation.
Despite the challenges faced by Indian diplomats, Jaishankar noted an improvement in the situation since the visa services were reinstated. However, he reiterated India's expectation for prompt action against those responsible for the attacks and threats.
Regarding the space afforded to Khalistani elements in Canada, Jaishankar highlighted instances of violence directed at Indian missions, emphasizing that such actions cannot be justified under the guise of freedom of speech. He underscored the need for diplomatic missions to be safeguarded by the host country, warning against sending negative messages that could tarnish their reputation.
In conclusion, Jaishankar reiterated India's commitment to protecting its diplomatic interests abroad and called for robust measures to ensure the safety and security of Indian diplomats in Canada and beyond.
