Japan earthquake terror: 5-feet tsunami waves hit after multiple tremors

Tsunami waves as long as 5 feet hit Japan on Monday after a massive 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit the country's central region. Soon after the 21 earthquakes above 4.4 magnitude hit Japan today, tsunami warnings were issued for the coastal prefectures of Ishikawa, Niigata, and Toyama. 

 

Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said, “Hazardous tsunami waves from this earthquake are possible within 300 km of the epicenter along the coasts of Japan.” 

 

A series of 21 earthquakes over 4.4 magnitude struck the East Asian nation in just 90 minutes. In the wake of the seismic activity, more than 33,000 homes in the prefectures of Toyama, Ishikawa, and Niigata experienced power outages. 

 

People residing in the earthquake-hit regions were requested to evacuate immediately by the officials, as per the reports. The roads in the affected areas witnessed cracks while the earthquake flattened numerous homes. The bullet train services have also been suspended in central and eastern Japan. 

 

According to the Japan Times, the country's Prime Minister - Fumio Kishida, while urging people to be safe, said, “In areas where tsunamis are expected, I would like to request that they evacuate as soon as possible.” 

 

Communication disruptions unfolded with phone and internet services facing outages in Ishikawa and Niigata. 

 

A reassurance from the spokesperson from the Japanese government - Yoshimasa Hayashi, said, “It has been confirmed that there are no abnormalities at the Shika nuclear power plant (in Ishikawa) and other stations as of now,” while stating the situation. 

 

The governments of North Korea, South Korea, and Russia have issued tsunami alerts for their respective regions, including the far eastern cities of Vladivostok and Nakhodka.
