French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed François Bayrou as the new Prime Minister of France, following a decision announced by the Élysée Palace.

François Bayrou takes charge as Prime Minister of France.

French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed François Bayrou as the new Prime Minister of France, following a decision announced by the Élysée Palace.

Bayrou, a centrist ally of Macron, now faces the challenge of forming a new government and preparing the national budget for 2025, which will require approval from the French National Assembly.

Bayrou, who founded the Democratic Movement (MoDem) in 2007, succeeds Michel Barnier, who was ousted from office after a no-confidence vote in the National Assembly on December 4.

Bayrou, born in 1952, has previously run for the presidency three times, in 2002, 2007, and 2012, but has not succeeded in securing the top position. His appointment to the Prime Minister's role marks a significant moment in French politics, particularly given the current political climate.

The decision has not been met without opposition. Jordan Bardella, leader of the far-right National Rally (RN), commented that while his party would not immediately oppose Bayrou’s nomination, it was important for Bayrou to recognise his lack of democratic legitimacy, pointing out that his party did not command a majority in the National Assembly. Bardella stressed the need for dialogue with all political factions represented in the parliament.

At the same time, the far-left party La France Insoumise (LFI) has announced plans to launch a no-confidence motion against Bayrou.

LFI has been vocal in its belief that the role of Prime Minister should be held by someone from the left-wing alliance, which secured the most seats in the most recent legislative elections.

The party’s decision to push for the removal of Bayrou highlights the ongoing political divide in France, with no clear consensus emerging on how to manage the country’s government.

In response to the growing political tensions, Bayrou emphasised the need for unity. Speaking to the press, he acknowledged the complexity of his task, stating that there was a “path to be found” that would bring people together rather than further divide the nation.

Bayrou's call for reconciliation reflects the broader challenges facing France in its current political landscape.

Barnier, who was forced to resign after his government was brought down by the no-confidence vote, congratulated Bayrou on his appointment.

In a message posted on X (formerly known as Twitter), Barnier expressed his personal wishes for Bayrou’s success as the new head of government, acknowledging the seriousness of the times both for France and for Europe.

Bayrou’s nomination and the political struggles that followed Barnier’s resignation are seen as a reflection of the ongoing tensions within French politics. The country is facing a period of uncertainty, and Bayrou’s leadership will be closely watched as he navigates these complex political waters.

The transfer of power ceremony, where Bayrou will formally take over the role of Prime Minister, is scheduled for 5 p.m. local time.
