French President Emmanuel Macron.

French President Emmanuel Macron has unveiled a new government following his marathon negotiations with the newly reappointed Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu.

According to the President’s office, Jean-Noël Barrot remains as foreign minister, while outgoing Labour Minister Catherine Vautrin takes on the defence portfolio. Paris Police Chief Laurent Nunez will take over the interior ministry, replacing Bruno Retailleau of the right-wing Republicans (LR) party.

Monique Barbut, the former France director of the worldwide World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), was to head the ministry of environmental transition, while Gerald Darmanin retained his post as justice minister.

Additionally, Rachida Datti, the culture minister who is set to stand trial for alleged corruption, has also retained her post. “A mission-based government has been appointed to draw up a budget for France before the end of the year,” wrote Lecornu in a post on X.

He said, “I would like to thank the women and men who have freely committed themselves to this government, putting aside personal and party interests. The only thing that matters is the interests of this country.”

Macron reinstated Lecornu on Friday, four days following his resignation after his first government collapsed. The former defence minister was tasked with assembling a government to present a 2026 budget on Monday.

Macron is facing one of the worst home crises since 2017. On Monday, he is due to travel to Egypt to support a Gaza ceasefire deal brokered by the United States.
