In a diplomatic maneuver aimed at quelling recent tensions, Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer expressed regret over the disparaging remarks made against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking during an official visit to India, Zameer assured that his government is taking decisive steps to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

The rift between the two nations was ignited when former Maldivian ministers, Mariyam Shiuna, Malsha, and Hassan Zihan, made derogatory comments about Prime Minister Modi following his visit to Lakshadweep.

However, Zameer sought to assuage concerns, emphasising that the Maldivian government does not endorse such sentiments and is actively addressing the issue.

"We have said that it's not the stand of the government or we believe that it shouldn't have been done. We are taking proper action to make sure that this doesn’t get repeated. There has been a misunderstanding, in social media. The governments of Maldives and India understand what has happened and we have passed that stage now," Zameer affirmed.

Further exacerbating tensions, Mohamed Muizzu set a deadline for Indian military personnel to depart from Maldives by May 10.

However, discussions between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Moosa Zameer underscored the importance of mutual interests in strengthening India-Maldives relations.

"We exchanged perspectives on increasing engagement and exchanges between Maldives and India, both bilaterally and in the international arena," Zameer shared following the meeting.

In an effort to soothe concerns over declining tourism from India, Zameer reiterated the Maldivian government's commitment to welcoming Indian tourists with open arms. Despite fluctuations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Zameer expressed optimism about the resurgence of Indian tourism in the Maldives in the near future.

"The peace and security of the Indian Ocean are crucial for both India, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the rest of our neighboring countries. So, as I mentioned earlier, we will continue to work together," Zameer emphasized.

Highlighting the significance of economic cooperation with India, Zameer acknowledged the integral role it plays in the Maldivian economy. Addressing concerns regarding debts, Zameer stressed the importance of transparent discussions based on accurate figures.

"The Maldivian people have benefited from the debt and numerous grants received from the Indian government, and we genuinely appreciate that support," Zameer concluded.
