S Jaishankar Begins Three Day Visit to Strengthen Ties With Maldives.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has arrived in the Maldives for a three-day official visit aimed at strengthening ties between the two countries. The visit, which began on August 9 and will run through August 11, is a significant step in furthering the bilateral relationship between India and the Maldives.

Upon arrival, Jaishankar was warmly received by Maldives' Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer at the airport. This visit marks Jaishankar’s first trip to the island nation since his re-appointment for a second term as India’s Foreign Minister. It follows the recent visit of Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu to India for the swearing-in ceremony of India’s new Cabinet and Council of Ministers.

Jaishankar took to social media to express his appreciation for the warm welcome, thanking Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer for his hospitality. In his post on X, Jaishankar highlighted the importance of the Maldives in India’s foreign policy, noting that the island nation holds a significant place in India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ and ‘SAGAR’ (Security and Growth for All in the Region) initiatives.

The primary goal of Jaishankar’s visit is to engage in meaningful discussions with Maldivian leaders to explore and enhance various aspects of bilateral cooperation. Both nations are expected to focus on areas of mutual interest, including economic partnerships, security cooperation, and regional stability.

Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer also expressed enthusiasm about the visit, emphasising the importance of further solidifying the historical ties between the Maldives and India. In a message on X, he welcomed Jaishankar and expressed anticipation for productive discussions that will strengthen the relationship between the two countries.

Jaishankar’s visit is part of a broader effort to deepen diplomatic and strategic ties between India and its neighbouring countries. His previous visit to the Maldives in January 2023 underscored the ongoing commitment to fostering strong bilateral relations.

The visit comes at a time of dynamic changes in the region, and both countries are keen on leveraging this opportunity to address shared challenges and opportunities. Jaishankar’s discussions in the Maldives are expected to pave the way for enhanced collaboration and mutual benefits for both nations.

The visit signifies India’s continued dedication to nurturing its relationship with the Maldives and reinforcing its strategic interests in the region. The outcome of Jaishankar’s meetings with Maldivian officials will likely set the stage for future engagements and cooperation between the two countries.
