The death toll in Mexican floods has risen to 47 as the casualties kept mounting on Monday due to constant rains and triggering landslides in different states in the country, officials said.
The authorities were rushing to evacuate people stuck in critically affected areas while rescue and relief operations continued on Monday. Days after heavy rains drenched several parts of Mexico, the country saw over the weekend the extent of the devastation in some states.
According to official versions, flooding swept away several vehicles and destroyed houses and roads in the affected regions across the country. President Claudia Sheinbaum travelled to some of the states and said the government will begin a census among affected people to distribute aid.
Meanwhile, Mexico’s civil protection agency said on Sunday night the heavy rains had killed 18 people in Veracruz State and 16 people in Hidalgo State, north of Mexico City. Additionally, at least 12 people were killed in Puebla, east of Mexico City. Earlier, in the central state of Querétaro, a child died under the rubble of a landslide.
Approximately 320,000 people have experienced power outages, and at least 16,000 homes have been damaged, according to authorities, who panic that more landslides and brimming rivers could aggravate the crisis. They said the toll is expected to rise as workers continue their search and rescue operations across several villages affected by the mudslides and debris on Sunday.
