Mexico has firmly stated its refusal to accept deportations conducted by Texas "under any circumstances," the country’s foreign ministry declared on Tuesday in response to the US Supreme Court’s decision permitting Texas to apprehend migrants who enter the state without authorisation.

The ministry denounced the state law, referred to as Senate Bill 4, asserting that it would result in family separations, violate the human rights of migrants, and foster "hostile environments" for the over 10 million people of Mexican descent residing in Texas.

Mexico has vehemently criticised the measure since last year and dismissed the notion of local or state agencies, rather than federal authorities, detaining and repatriating migrants and asylum seekers to Mexican territory.

Speaking anonymously, a senior Mexican foreign ministry official stated that the Supreme Court ruling would not impact existing migration agreements between the two nations.

While Mexico has served as the United States immigration enforcer, often dissuading migrants from congregating at the border, the country has also publicly advocated for two pivotal policies to address the underlying causes that compel people to leave their home countries — such as poverty, violence, inequality, and climate change — and to expand regular migration pathways.

Appeals Court freezes controversial law

A federal appeals court has halted Texas' contentious immigration law, among the strictest laws of its kind enacted by a US state in modern times.

The decision was made shortly after the Supreme Court permitted the enactment of the measure, SB4, pending an appeal.

The law would authorise state officials to detain and prosecute unauthorised migrants. Mexico has declined to accept any migrants deported by Texas under the new law.

The Biden administration has contested SB4, deeming it unconstitutional.
