Confusion over the status of the Mizoram-Myanmar border gate at Zokhawthar has been cleared, with authorities now confirming it will remain open despite earlier announcements of closure.
The about-turn comes after a meeting between the Mizoram home department, Assam Rifles (paramilitary force guarding the border), and other law enforcement agencies.
This follows an initial decision by the Assam Rifles to seal the 510 km border from May 1st to curb cross-border activity.
The move sparked concern among residents of border villages on both sides, who rely on the crossing for essential needs and cultural ties.
Protests erupted on April 19th at the Zokhawthar gate, demanding its reopening after the conclusion of Mizoram's Lok Sabha elections (held April 17th).
The Assam Rifles had previously closed the border for 48 hours due to the elections.
In a conciliatory move, the Assam Rifles partially opened the gate from April 20th to 30th for those seeking medical attention, essential food items, and medicines.
However, their initial statement indicated a full closure from May 1st.
The latest decision to keep the gate open follows intervention by the Mizoram home department, who reportedly expressed concerns to the Assam Rifles about causing unnecessary panic among civilians.
This development brings relief to residents of border communities who depend on cross-border movement for their livelihoods and social connections.
