Netanyahu govt votes to close down Al Jazeera's Israel office

Benjamin Netanyahu in April accused the Qatar-based broadcaster of 'harming' Israel's security and 'actively participating' in the incited slaughter of IDF troops on October 7.

The Israeli Cabinet has unanimously voted to close down the local Al Jazeera office, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday.

"The government headed by me unanimously decided: the incitement channel Al Jazeera will be closed in Israel," Netanyahu wrote on X.

Last month, Netanyahu accused the Qatar-based broadcaster of "harming" Israel's security and "actively participating" in the incited slaughter of IDF troops on October 7.

"The terrorist station Al-Jazeera will stop broadcasting from Israel. I aim to take quick action per the new law to halt the channel's functioning," he said of the move, which has been deemed unnecessary by Western political experts and rights campaigners.

"I welcome the law proposed by Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi with the support of coalition members led by coalition chairman Ofir Katz," Netanyahu said on April 1 after the Israeli Parliament enacted legislation to combat foreign media material that it said threatened national security.

On Sunday, Karhi indicated that after receiving Cabinet permission, he quickly signed the orders against Al Jazeera.

"Our directives will take effect immediately. Too much time has gone and too many needless legal barriers have been erected before we can finally put an end to Al Jazeera's oiled incitement machine, which endangers the country's security.

"For months, I did everything and will continue to do everything to ensure that they can no longer operate from Israel," he wrote on X.
