National Security Advisor Ajit Doval recently held a series of high-level meetings in France, aiming to strengthen the partnership between India and France and advance cooperation in various fields.

During his visit, Doval met with French President Emmanuel Macron, the Director General of the French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA), Emmanuel Chiva, and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot.

Doval's meeting with President Macron focused on reiterating the mutual commitment to the India-France Horizon 2047 roadmap, a strategic plan for enhancing ties between the two nations over the coming decades.

The Indian Embassy in France, in a post on X, shared that Doval conveyed greetings from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to President Macron. In response, President Macron stressed the importance of continued India-France efforts to advance global peace and tackle pressing global challenges. He also appreciated the initiatives taken by Prime Minister Modi on international platforms.

Another important part of Doval's visit was his meeting with Emmanuel Chiva, the head of the French Defence Procurement Agency. The discussions revolved around France's defence planning and procurement processes, with a strong emphasis on collaboration in future defence technologies and innovation.

The talks also explored opportunities for cooperation between India and France in the area of defence startups and advanced technology, highlighting a shared interest in strengthening defence ties.

On Wednesday, Doval met with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot. This meeting allowed the two officials to exchange views on pressing issues, particularly focusing on the ongoing conflicts in Europe and the Middle East.

The situation in these regions has become a major global concern, and both India and France are working towards a collaborative approach to address these challenges.

Doval's trip also included a meeting with French Minister for the Armed Forces, Sebastien Lecornu. This meeting focused primarily on defence cooperation between India and France, particularly in the context of significant projects like the Rafale Marine fighter jets and Scorpene submarines.

Additionally, the talks covered collaboration in space exploration and the overall international situation, with particular attention paid to the conflict in Ukraine. According to a statement by the French Embassy in India, the discussions were extensive and ranged across multiple domains of bilateral cooperation.

The Rafale Marine, a naval variant of the Rafale fighter aircraft, has been a significant point of discussion in India-France defence cooperation. India has already acquired Rafale fighter jets for its air force, and there are ongoing talks about adding Rafale Marine jets to bolster the Indian Navy's capabilities.

The Scorpene submarines, built with French collaboration, also represent a crucial aspect of India's naval strength and are a testament to the defence cooperation between the two countries.

Space collaboration is another key aspect of the bilateral relationship. France has been a long-term partner in India's space exploration efforts. Both nations have worked closely together on a variety of projects, including satellite launches and research initiatives aimed at peaceful uses of space technology. The continued dialogue on space cooperation highlights a shared vision for utilising space for the benefit of humanity.

The meetings also took into consideration the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, a matter of concern for both India and France. The discussions underscored the international dimensions of the conflict and the need for a diplomatic resolution.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has caused significant geopolitical tensions, affecting not only Europe but also global markets and international relations. Both countries have an interest in ensuring stability in the region and avoiding further escalation.

In addition to defence and geopolitical issues, the visit also highlighted the importance of joint initiatives in technology and innovation. France has been a significant supporter of India's growing technological capabilities, particularly in defence technology and advanced research.

By focusing on these areas, both countries hope to foster a stronger strategic partnership that addresses not only current challenges but also anticipates future needs.

Doval's meetings in France have demonstrated the depth of the India-France relationship, touching on a wide range of subjects including defence, technology, geopolitical challenges, and cooperation in space.

The emphasis on the Horizon 2047 roadmap reflects both countries' long-term commitment to enhancing their bilateral ties. With significant projects like Rafale Marine, Scorpene submarines, and shared initiatives in technology and space, India and France are looking forward to a partnership that not only benefits both nations but also contributes to global stability and progress.
