Obama Lauds Biden’s Patriotism After Re-election Withdrawal.

Former President Barack Obama has lauded Joe Biden following Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. In a heartfelt statement, Obama described Biden as “one of America’s most consequential presidents” and a “patriot of the highest order.”

Obama’s praise came after Biden announced he would not seek re-election and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee. Although Obama supported Biden’s decision, he did not clarify whether he would endorse Harris for the presidency.

Reflecting on his choice of Biden as Vice President, Obama recalled, “Sixteen years ago, when I was choosing a vice president, I admired Joe’s career and character. His empathy, resilience, and decency stood out to me.”

Obama highlighted Biden’s achievements, including ending the pandemic, creating jobs, reducing prescription drug costs, passing major gun safety laws, and addressing climate change.

Obama also commended Biden for restoring America's international standing, revitalising NATO, and confronting Russian aggression in Ukraine. “Joe has never backed down from a challenge,” Obama said. “His decision to pass the torch to a new nominee is a testament to his love for the country and his commitment to public service.”

Looking ahead to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Obama expressed confidence in the party’s ability to select an excellent nominee. He emphasised that Biden’s vision of a unified and prosperous America would be evident at the convention. Obama urged Democrats to unite and carry forward Biden’s message of hope and progress.

Earlier on Sunday, Biden made his announcement to step aside, focusing on his duties as President for the remainder of his term. He also extended his gratitude to Kamala Harris for being an “extraordinary partner” and encouraged Democrats to rally behind Harris to defeat Republican candidate Donald Trump in the upcoming election.

In a letter posted on social media, Biden said, “I have decided not to seek re-election for the best interest of my party and the country. I will continue to fulfil my duties as President and fully support Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee. It’s time for us to unite and win this election.”
