A plane carrying the Vice President of Malawi, Saulos Chilima, along with nine other individuals, has gone missing, sparking a major search operation. The incident was reported, and has prompted immediate action from Malawi's presidential office and cabinet.

According to an official statement, the aircraft, operated by the Malawi Defence Force, took off from Lilongwe at 9:17 a.m. local time. It was scheduled to land at Mzuzu International Airport, located roughly 380 kilometres north of Lilongwe.

However, the plane failed to arrive at its destination and subsequently went off the radar. Efforts by aviation authorities to establish contact with the aircraft have so far been unsuccessful.

The presidential office has been closely monitoring the situation. General Valentino Phiri, commander of the Malawi Defense Force, has briefed President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera about the incident.

In response, President Chakwera cancelled his scheduled trip to the Bahamas to oversee the search and rescue efforts personally. He has ordered all relevant regional and national agencies to mobilise immediately to locate the missing aircraft.

The search operation is currently underway, and further updates are expected as more information becomes available. The disappearance of the plane has raised significant concerns and the nation is anxiously awaiting news about the vice president and the other passengers on board.

This situation highlights the crucial role of timely communication and efficient emergency response mechanisms in aviation. As authorities work around the clock to find the missing plane, the incident underscores the importance of advanced radar and tracking systems to prevent such occurrences and ensure swift rescue operations when needed.

The people of Malawi, along with the international community, are hoping for a positive outcome to this search operation. The incident has also brought to light the vulnerabilities in aviation safety, particularly in less developed regions, and the need for continuous improvements to prevent similar incidents in the future.

As the search continues, the nation remains on edge, with hopes pinned on the successful location and rescue of the vice president and the other passengers. The authorities' response in the coming hours will be critical in determining the fate of those on board the missing aircraft.
