Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended India's para-athletics team for their outstanding performance in the recently concluded World Para Athletics Championship held in Kobe, Japan. The team showcased remarkable prowess, securing a total of 17 medals, including six gold medals.
Expressing his delight, PM Modi highlighted the significant improvement in India's ranking, moving from 34th to 6th place in just seven years. This achievement marks a substantial leap forward from the previous edition's 19th place finish, reflecting the team's dedication and hard work.
In a tweet, PM Modi praised the exceptional athletes and the support staff behind the scenes for their relentless efforts in achieving this feat. He emphasised the inspiring display of determination and perseverance, showcasing to the world what can be accomplished through hard work and commitment.
Among the gold medalists were Simran Sharma in women's 200m T12, Deepthi Jeevanji in women's 400m T20, Sachin Khilari in men's shot put F46, Sumit Antil in men's javelin F64, Thangavelu Mariyappan in men's high jump T63, and Ekta Bhyan in women's club throw F51.
India's performance in the championship surpassed its previous record, with a total of 17 medals exceeding the earlier haul of 10 medals achieved in the 2023 edition held in Paris. This accomplishment highlights the growing prowess and determination of India's para-athletes on the global stage.
