Polls open in Russia as Putin's grip on power tightens; opposition silenced or eliminated

Russia is conducting a presidential election widely anticipated to secure Vladimir Putin's leadership well into the 2030s. The primary voting period spans three days starting from March 15, with early and postal voting already underway. This includes regions within Ukraine under Russian occupation where efforts to assert authority are ongoing.

On Friday, voters in Russia began heading to the polls for a three-day presidential election widely expected to secure President Vladimir Putin's rule for another six years, amidst his suppression of dissent.

From Friday through Sunday, voters will cast their ballots at polling stations spanning the country's 11 time zones, including regions like Chukotka and Kamchatka in the east, as well as territories illegally annexed in Ukraine.

The election occurs amidst a severe crackdown that has severely restricted independent media and prominent human rights organizations, consolidating Putin's complete control over the political landscape.

Furthermore, it coincides with the third year of Moscow's conflict in Ukraine.

While Russia holds the advantage on the battlefield, making incremental progress albeit slowly, Ukraine has managed to expose vulnerabilities within Russia's defenses: employing long-range drone strikes deep within Russian territory and utilizing advanced drones to challenge its Black Sea fleet.

The election lacks any significant suspense as 71-year-old Putin seeks his fifth term with minimal opposition. His political rivals either face imprisonment or reside in exile abroad, with the most formidable opponent, Alexei Navalny, having recently passed away in a remote Arctic penal facility.

The remaining three candidates on the ballot represent low-profile politicians from nominal opposition factions aligning closely with the Kremlin's directives.

Reportedly, Observers hold minimal expectations regarding the fairness and transparency of the election. With voters presented with limited choices, the prospects for independent monitoring are severely constrained.

Only candidates registered officially or state-supported advisory bodies have the authority to designate observers to polling stations, diminishing the presence of independent watchdogs.

Given the extensive balloting period spanning three days and nearly 100,000 polling stations nationwide, effective monitoring is inherently challenging, according to reports.

According to reports, Ukraine plays a central role in this election, as suggested by political analysts and opposition figures. They argue that Putin aims to leverage his almost certain electoral triumph as validation for both the war and his management of it, implying widespread backing.

Conversely, the opposition aims to utilize the vote as a platform to showcase their dissatisfaction with both the conflict and the Kremlin's policies.

According to political analyst Abbas Gallyamov, who formerly served as Putin's speechwriter, the Kremlin excluded two politicians from the ballot who aimed to run on an antiwar platform and garnered genuine, albeit not substantial, support. This move effectively eliminated any voter choice on what Gallyamov described as "the primary issue on Russia's political agenda."

The scattered opposition in Russia has reportedly called for individuals dissatisfied with Putin or the ongoing war to gather at polling stations at noon on Sunday, the last day of voting, as a form of protest. This tactic was supported by Navalny prior to his passing. However, the effectiveness of this strategy remains uncertain.
