U.S. President Joe Biden has pardoned his son Hunter Biden, sparing him potential prison time for federal gun and tax convictions. This decision marks a significant shift from Biden's earlier stance against using presidential powers to assist his family members.
In a statement released by the White House, Joe Biden explained his reasoning:
"From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making, and I kept my word. But I have watched my son face selective and unfair prosecution."
The president highlighted that cases like Hunter’s, involving late tax payments due to addiction, are typically resolved without criminal charges. He accused political bias of influencing the proceedings.
Hunter Biden’s legal troubles stem from two key cases:
- Gun Case: In 2018, Hunter was convicted of lying on a federal form while purchasing a firearm, claiming he was not using or addicted to drugs.
- Tax Case: He was also charged with failing to pay over $1.4 million in taxes, though he later pled guilty and paid back the amount with penalties and interest.
Hunter, a recovering drug addict, has been a frequent target of Republican criticism, including from former President Donald Trump.
The U.S. President expressed frustration over what he viewed as attempts to exploit his son’s struggles for political gain.
"In trying to break Hunter, they’ve tried to break me. Enough is enough," Biden said.
The pardon decision was made during the Thanksgiving holiday while Biden was with his family in Nantucket. He described it as a deeply personal and difficult choice, influenced by his belief that political interference had corrupted the judicial process.
Earlier, Biden had firmly ruled out granting a pardon, stating during the gun case trial:
"I will abide by the jury's decision. I will not pardon him."
However, over the weekend, he reconsidered, citing concerns over fairness and the impact of selective prosecution.
"I hope Americans understand why a father and a President would come to this decision," Biden said, emphasising his dual roles as a parent and a leader committed to justice.
This controversial decision has drawn mixed reactions, as the debate over Hunter Biden’s cases continues to unfold.
