Israel Protests Grow Calling For Release Of Captives From Gaza.

Thousands of anti-government protesters gathered in various locations across Israel, urging the Israeli government to intensify its efforts in securing the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. The protest, centred in Tel Aviv, saw demonstrators rallying outside army headquarters and government offices, calling for immediate action from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration. The protesters voiced their concerns about the government’s inability to negotiate the release of over one hundred captives still being held in Gaza. The ongoing conflict, which escalated following Hamas’ attack on October 7, has left Israel grappling with the challenge of recovering hostages while continuing its military offensive in the region.

The demonstrators, many of whom were families of the captives, expressed deep frustration with the government's efforts, accusing Netanyahu of prioritising his hold on power over the lives of the captives. They demanded that the government seek a peaceful resolution with Hamas to ensure the safe return of the prisoners. The tension over the issue has been rising, especially after six hostages' bodies were recovered from Gaza two weeks ago. The protest on Saturday followed a similar mass demonstration last weekend, which drew an estimated 750,000 participants, according to reports.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas has significantly escalated, with the Israeli government continuing its military operations in Gaza, targeting Hamas' infrastructure. Israel’s stated objective is to dismantle the terror group, though the country has faced increasing pressure from both domestic and international communities to minimise civilian casualties in the densely populated Gaza Strip.

In a tragic incident, Israeli airstrikes recently killed six staff members of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) at a school in Gaza, which was serving as a shelter for displaced families. The strikes, which targeted the school in Nuseirat in central Gaza, also resulted in the deaths of at least 34 people, according to media reports. The UNRWA school had been sheltering around 12,000 displaced individuals, including women and children. This incident marks the fifth time the school has been hit since the conflict began over 11 months ago.
