Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday for India's efforts in seeking a peaceful resolution to the ongoing Ukraine crisis.

The acknowledgment came during their talks at the Kremlin, as reported by the official TASS news agency.

"I am grateful to you for the attention you pay to the most pressing issues, particularly trying to find ways to resolve the Ukraine crisis, primarily through peaceful means," Putin stated.

In televised remarks, Modi conveyed India's stance on peace, emphasizing its readiness to contribute to ending the conflict in Ukraine. "For a bright future for the new generation, peace is most essential...Peace talks do not succeed amidst bombs, guns, and bullets," Modi asserted.

The discussions followed Modi's informal meeting with Putin the previous day, where he found hope in their dialogue.

"Everyone believing in humanity is pained if there is loss of lives. In that too, if innocent children are murdered; if innocent children die, it is heart-wrenching and very painful," Modi remarked, amidst global concerns over recent events, including a suspected missile strike on a children's hospital in Kyiv.

India has refrained from condemning Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, instead advocating for a resolution through dialogue and diplomacy.

Putin highlighted the close cooperation between Russia and India on the international stage.

"We closely cooperate on the international stage, namely within international organisations," Putin noted, referring to collaborations within the UN, Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, and BRICS.

The Russian leader acknowledged the extensive discussions held during Modi's visit, which included an informal exchange of views on various issues. The talks underscored their countries' longstanding friendship and strategic partnership.

Meanwhile, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov clarified that Modi did not position himself as a mediator in the Ukraine conflict during the bilateral talks.

"Modi is not claiming to be a mediator," Peskov affirmed, responding to queries about India's potential role in mediation.

According to Peskov, Modi proposed settlement initiatives and engaged in discussions aimed at promoting peace.

"Everyone discusses peace, everyone wants peace, and we want peace too, ensuring our security. That is why we exchange views," Peskov elaborated.

Earlier, Peskov expressed skepticism regarding whether NATO countries would consider Modi's peace initiatives amid their ongoing summit.

He acknowledged global dialogue on the matter, noting the importance of maintaining channels for constructive engagement.

Putin also highlighted the significant increase in trade between Russia and India, citing a 66 percent rise last year and a further 20 percent increase in the first quarter of this year.

He congratulated Modi on his recent re-election as India's prime minister and welcomed him to Russia for his first official foreign visit after assuming office.

"Our countries have enjoyed decades of good friendship. Today, our relations have the nature of a privileged strategic partnership," Putin affirmed.
