The final meeting of BRICS Sherpas and Sous-Sherpas in Ekaterinburg, Russia, concluded with the official handover of the BRICS chairmanship from Russia to Brazil. The ceremony marks the end of Russia's tenure as chair, a period marked by significant developments and achievements for the bloc.
Sergey Ryabkov, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister and BRICS Sherpa, expressed gratitude for the collective efforts of member nations during Russia's presidency.
Summarizing the year, he emphasized the strengthened resilience and progress across multiple areas, including politics, security, economy, finance, and humanitarian cooperation.
During its chairmanship, Russia hosted over 250 events, culminating in the XVI BRICS Summit in Kazan from October 22 to 24. The Kazan Declaration, adopted during the summit, highlighted key agreements and expanded the bloc’s membership.
The group welcomed Egypt, Iran, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia as full members in 2024, while Belarus, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand joined as BRICS partners earlier.
Among the notable accomplishments of Russia's presidency were the establishment of a BRICS grain exchange, the creation of a contact group on climate and sustainable development, the development of a geological, technological, and investment platform, and the formation of a working group on nuclear medicine. These initiatives aim to enhance cooperation and provide a foundation for future collaboration.
Ryabkov described the transition as both a moment of sadness and joy, acknowledging the conclusion of Russia’s term while celebrating the progress achieved together with other member nations. He expressed confidence that these accomplishments would serve as a solid basis for Brazil to build upon during its chairmanship.
