Buildings in Russia damaged following drone strike.

A Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian city of Kazan led to the temporary closure of the city's airport, according to reports from Russian media and aviation authorities.

The attack targeted a residential complex in Kazan, located approximately 800 km east of Moscow, and took place between 7:40 a.m. and 9:20 a.m. local time.

Russia's Defence Ministry confirmed the assault, stating that the city endured three waves of drone strikes within this period. Despite the scale of the attack, there were no casualties reported, and local authorities quickly responded to mitigate any potential harm to residents.

The Mayor of Kazan announced on Telegram that all planned mass events for the weekend would be cancelled, and temporary accommodation would be arranged for those evacuated from affected areas.

The Baza Telegram channel, which has ties to Russia's security services, shared an unverified video showing an aerial object crashing into a high-rise building, creating a large fireball. Although the footage has not been independently confirmed, it highlights the seriousness of the attack.

In response to the attack, Kazan's airport was temporarily shut down, with the Russian aviation watchdog, Rosaviatsia, announcing the suspension of both flight arrivals and departures.

Additional temporary restrictions were also imposed on two other airports in the region—Izhevsk, located northeast of Kazan, and Saratov, situated approximately 400 miles to the south. The restrictions at Saratov were later lifted, allowing normal operations to resume.

This attack highlights the ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Russia, with both sides using increasingly advanced technology in their military strategies.

While no fatalities were reported, the incident demonstrates the vulnerability of civilian infrastructure, including airports and residential areas, to such drone strikes. As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how both nations will respond to these types of attacks and their impact on daily life in the region.
