Egypt calls for de-escalation on Iran nuclear talks.

Egyptian President Abdel Fatah El-Sisi has said that the Iranian nuclear issue must be handled with due care, as it remains an essential part of overall peace for the entire region.

He spoke with his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, stressing that the parties involved in the Iranian nuclear issue must return to the negotiating table and engage in serious and constructive dialogue.

Sisi and Pezeshkian spoke over the phone, according to a written statement from the Egyptian presidency.

The statement said that Sisi emphasised the need “to de-escalate and contain tensions in light of the escalation in the region.” He added that it is a collective responsibility of all peoples to address the prevailing issues in the Middle East, “which undermine the security and stability of the region.”

Meanwhile, the Iranian president thanked Sisi for his efforts and sponsorship in bringing Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) closer, praising Egypt’s mediation on Gaza and its constructive dialogue.

Pezeshkian said these efforts had led to the agreement signed in Cairo on Tuesday, which re-established cooperation between Iran and the IAEA following months of Egyptian mediation.

On Saturday, Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations confirmed that Tehran and the IAEA had reinitiated talks.

The Iranian parliament, after US strikes on its three main nuclear installations, suspended cooperation with the IAEA over what it described as the agency’s weak criticism of the United States.

Iran and the US had been preparing for the sixth round of nuclear negotiations when Israel, on Friday, launched Operation Rising Lion, targeting Iranian military generals and nuclear scientists.

The attacks prompted a serious Iranian response, which included barrages of drones and cruise and hypersonic ballistic missiles fired at Israel, triggering what later became known as the 12-day conflict.

The 12-day conflict came to a halt under a US-sponsored ceasefire, which took effect on June 24.
