Western Australian skies were lit up by Aurora Australis, also known as the Southern Lights due to a severe geomagnetic storm.

Solar flares and coronal mass ejections dazzle the skies, extending the remarkable celestial spectacle far across the northern hemisphere.

However, as breathtaking as the auroras look, concerns loom over potential disruptions to Earth's communications networks tonight and into the weekend.

According to the Space Weather Prediction Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, this solar storm is a rare occurrence that hasn't been seen since October 2003.

Hundreds of people took to social media platform X to share photos and videos of the stunning celestial spectacle.

Bill Nye, the Science Guy, expressed apprehension about the solar storm's implications for our technologically reliant society. As CNN reported, drawing parallels to the Carrington Event of 1859, Nye emphasised the vulnerability posed by our heavy dependence on electricity and electronics, underscoring the potential ramifications should disruptions occur.

The ongoing geomagnetic storm has escalated to an "extreme" level, rated 5 out of 5 by the Space Weather Prediction Center. This marks a significant escalation in solar activity not witnessed since 2003.

The recent increase in solar activity has resulted in stunning auroras and bright and colourful displays illuminating the Earth's poles.

Nonetheless, this heightened activity also poses a risk to communication networks, satellite operations, and high-frequency radio communications, according to CNN, which has prompted authorities, including the Biden administration, to be vigilant.

Scientists warn that the surge of solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun could cause communication disruptions on Earth that could last until the weekend.
