Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday praised US President-elect Donald J. Trump as an intelligent and seasoned politician but said that he did not believe that Trump was safer after recent assassination attempts on his life.
During his Pennsylvania rally in July, he got injured, while in a separate incident in September, a man was charged with attempted assassination after he was found positioning himself with a rifle at one of Trump's Florida golf courses.
While talking to reporters in Kazakhstan after the summit, he said he was shocked to see the way the US election campaign had unfolded.
He mentioned “the immature methods used to fight against Trump, up to and including the assassination attempts on his life.”
“By the way, I don’t think Trump is safe now,” Putin said.
"Sadly, in the history of the United States, several incidents of such kind have taken place. I believe Trump is an intelligent man, and I hope I wish for his safety and hope he will remain cautious.”
Putin, while taking a jibe at the Democratic Party, said he was amused to hear about how Trump's family was targeted, especially his children, by the opposition during the US election campaign.
He said, “Such behaviour was "revolting,” and not even “bandits” would use such language in Russia.
When asked about the Biden administration’s decision to arm Ukraine with long-range Western missiles, he said it is a clear indication that the West is trying to escalate the war in Ukraine by allowing Kyiv to strike Russia with Western-supplied armoury.
He also said that this could be a ploy to either assist Trump by giving him something to roll back or to make his life more difficult with Russia.
Furthermore, he believes that Trump will find a solution to Ukraine and said Russia will also respond positively when Trump initiates negotiations.
