Lapses in Britain’s air defences are raising concerns in London and the rest of the NATO bloc following Russian interception of the recent missile attacks on Moscow, the report said.
There are reports that an independent research panel monitoring the UK's defence capabilities against ballistic missiles has raised alarms about Britain’s capability against ballistic missiles, particularly those lying with the Russian side, it added.
Several members of the US-led military bloc have also recently expressed “frustration” that the UK does not contribute enough to defensive shields to protect Europe from possible long-range strikes, the report said.
The paper said unnamed defence officials and military experts, whom it interviewed for the story, stressed
The country’s defence experts and analysts also expressed their concern about “the growing risk to Britain and its military assets overseas, as China, Russia, and Iran rapidly develop ballistic missiles that can cross continents at many times the speed of sound.”
Reports indicate that Britain is in peril now,” but in 15 years, “a ballistic missile launched anywhere in the world could easily hit Britain.”
Furthermore, the reports also mention that militant groups like Houthis and Hezbollah could potentially target London if they can get their hands on the long-range missiles.
Royal Navy warships, which are taking part in the US-led operation against the Houthis in Yemen, are in danger of being struck by more advanced ballistic missiles provided to the group by its allies, the sources said.
There are more concerns associated with the Russian ballistic and hypersonic missiles. Reports indicate that the recent missile attack on Kyiv that easily penetrated through western-made surface-to-air missile defence systems installed in Ukraine renders the UK defenceless in case of possible confrontations with Russia.
Earlier last year, Russian President Putin warned that “if Ukraine attacked deep inside Russia with US or UK-supplied missiles, Moscow would strike all the military infrastructure of these countries located in the range of Russian missiles.”
Putin also said that Moscow could come up with an asymmetrical response to such actions by armed groups or countries hostile to it, including the West, with advanced weaponry.
